So, since I reluctantly joined Facebook, my old college roommate and a friend from high school (we were in Science Fiction club together) have found me. So I guess it's good for something, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg just to see your guestbook, like Classmates does.

And now I need to summarize everything I've been doing for the last 20 years...Ack!

I was talking to my best friend Beth on the phone this morning. This is the person who a year ago, while playing around with my iPod, proclaimed that she couldn't see why anyone would need to carry so much music around with them when a CD changer in your car should serve the same purpose. No one should want to listen to more than a few CDs worth of music at a time.  She was quite proud of the fact that an .mp3 file had never seen the inside of her computer (as far as she knew), and couldn't see why anyone would want to amass such a collection. Although she did concede at the time, that a small player like mine is far more portable and therefore practical for a bus rider like myself.  This said as she spent an hour poking around on my device. ;p

Since then, she purchased a phone that plays music files. And thus started the slide to her corruption. It was enough to whet an appetite she didn't know she had. An mp3 payer soon followed. Today, after admitting how addicted she is to Limewire, and lamenting that she couldn't believe her recently purchased player was getting full already, she was still expressing disbelief that people regularly fill up 60 and 80 GB players. Why on earth would anyone need to carry that much around with them?

Ah, Denial is the longest river in the world, my dear friend. ;)

An aside: she was looking at a bunch of anime music videos as she made the statements in the first paragraph, and offhandedly remarked, "Maybe I should check out some anime sometime..." She's one of those people who thinks cartoons are only for kids, and any adult who watches them must have a screw loose. We'll convert her into an otaku yet, too. Muahahaha! *rubs hands evilly*

Hmm. I don't have a "friends policy," really. I'm ecstatic when someone adds me. I care not how often you update, or how often you comment. Unless you're a total ass, what you say in your posts causes me to care about you, whether I've met you or not, whether you comment or not. I tend to leave people on my list whether they drop me later or not; its my way of keeping in touch and knowing you're ok, unless the journal is friends only, and then it's rather pointless. The only person I ever dropped was someone who expressed complete joy over something that would be used to oppress people I care about. I used to add people at random quite often, although I would always leave a comment when I did. Lately, I've gotten wary about doing that - some people seem to really hate it. If someone has a friends only journal, I won't usually add them unless it's someone who added me first. I have no wish to impose - sometimes it seems offputting, but I know people have their reasons. If anything, I suppose I ought to be a little more cautious about what I leave public. I'm glad this place gives me the option - most places don't.

I confess to a little disappointment and hurt as well, when someone drops me. I know I shouldn't take it personally, and I try not to ( I know I'm not every ones cup of tea), but I'm human and I have emotions after all. Luckily, it doesn't happen very often. Less often than people add me, anyway. ;)

Hmmm, I seem to have been added by....a squirrel? Hey, people, fish, rodents, it's all good! ;p

Um, is squirrelspeak listed on Babelfish? I'm going to have to get used to that....

I have such great friends at work. VT, DP and ML have all informed me that since it's my birthday Monday, they're kidnapping me on Saturday to go shopping at the outlets in Cabezon (out towards Palm Springs). They are all of the opinion I need more girl clothes, especially stuff that John won't wear and get all stretched out (we both wear a lot of T-shirts and polo shirts); they're quite right, I do need some nice clothes now that I'm on this management team, and it would be nice to have something new for the talk I have to give in a couple of weeks. The last new outfit I got was the last time I gave a presentation on the shark tagging program for an American Fisheries Society conference in Ventura, and Gareth was still a baby then. The last time I pulled out my khaki pants (the only non-jeans I own) I found they had gotten permanent stains on them, so I can't wear them to work any more. I probably tend to look more threadbare at work than I should.

And everyone wants to get started Christmas shopping. Between all the car repairs and still owing for John's dental bills and a lot of other crap, I'm not going to be able to get much, but it'll be a fun trip anyway. I haven't gotten the chance to even do much window shopping lately, so that'll be nice.

I hope [livejournal.com profile] bakayaro_onna doesn't mind me posting this. I made it for her when she finally let us see one of her stories. I don't think I ever posted it here. Anyhow we had an exchange once about dozing off at work while in front of the computer, and this is what my twisted brain came up with. Honestly, it shouldn't be let out of the house without being supervised.

If our alter egos should run into each other... )

Deep breath. More coffee. Only five more posts. Where are those toothpicks?

Well, I was considering doing something creative here, but my daughter won't let me. So I'll just say Happy 24th [livejournal.com profile] metalmensch

(Faye is grumbling in the background -- "He didn't invite me to be in his harem!")
