Visit the kelpforest....

After school a Friday or two ago, Angus announced he wanted to go see some sea lions - I'd mentioned I'd seen they were taking over the Fish Harbor dock in front of the Army Corp of Engineers trailers. I figured it would be a way to work in a few more waymarks as well.



War is chaos. This is the WWII Pacific Submarine Memorial West. Turbine end of a torpedo, a great causer of chaos.

Another walk (since it was Spring Break and the kids were home all week), this time to Bolsa Chica Ecological Preserve, where we walked from the parking up to the lagoon north of the flood control channel, on a trail at the base of the mesa. We hadn't been along that path before. While trying to get close to some flowers, I looked down and saw this male side-blotched lizard catching some late-afternoon rays at the front of his burrow in the earth.

My garden club usually tries to put on its own flower show, but sometimes the logistics don't work out. Since my friend Carole became the president of the county district garden clubs, we put on a district wide flower show. I helped by registering everyone's entries, and helping to set up and tear down. I think my favorites are the miniature arrangements. This one is only a couple of inches wide.

We went for a walk downtown after the US Open of Surfing was done for the day. Lots of people watching still be had and we cooled off with some Dairy Queen, strolling around as we ate. These old beach bungalows down there are getting fewer and farther between.

Cesar Chavez Day here in CA - it's a state holiday, so it's one I get off work. The kids don't though, so they came home and said "Why are you home so early?" I pulled a few weeds while I was home, and then later, the Aquarium was having an Autism families night,where the aquarium was open late until 9:00. It was very quiet and relaxed, hardly anyone there, which I suppose was the point - although I also wonder if even the discounted price might have been a hardship for some people.
