The major fish wholsalers in Los Angeles Harbor, the municipal markets - that's what we're officially supposed to call the them. The vernacular is "Forty Thieves"

The second picture was actually taken before the first; amazing the difference exposure settings makes.

Why is it called "40 thieves"? Are/Were there 40 fish mongers before?

I don't think there was ever room for that many dealers there. Actually, I think it's in reference to Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves - an implication that the fish businesses are dishonest and out to swindle someone, whether their customers or the fishermen they're buying from...

That's why we're not allowed to call them that anymore. ;)
