Jun. 28th, 2002 05:15 pmOK this flag flap is getting out of control. Yesterday, I have a senator from West Virginia say:
"I'm not going to stand for these atheists running the country. If they don't like it they can just leave."
Excuse me? Last I heard, one of the tenets for founding this country was religious freedom. I believe that means the freedom to choose not to be religious. Those two words were only stuck in 1954 during the McCarthy era (and I assume if you didn't say them, you were considered a commie).
How would some people like it if the word "atheist" was replaced with "Jew" or "Catholic" or "Baptist?"
What if we replaced those two words with "under Allah" or "under the goddess" or as someone quipped at work "under water?" Yeah, I like that one.
There are a lot more important things for our politicians to be getting hysterical about.
