Angus just asked me how to spell abomination. What the hell is he writing now?

comic book artist

I believe he may have an early start on fanfiction writing. Or comic book art, maybe. Over the MLK weekend he wrote and drew a 60-page Bionicle/Codename: Kids Next Door crossover. I didn't quite get the story, but he was occupied, doing something creative, and he wasn't watching televsion. His art style really hasn't progressed a lot since he was five; bodies and heads are ovals, arm and legs are rectangles, girls all have an arc sprouting from each side of their heads as hair. It's very stylized - and now that I think of it, maybe slightly ancient egyptian-looking. Maybe not surprising since he was obsessed with Egypt for a good while - he still is interested but not so one track mind anymore. I don't know whether this is something to be concerned about, since most of the adults I know can only draw stick figures. I just need to figure out how to teach him how to draw in frames so he's not using up so much paper!

Very cool - we'll check those out! Either that or I've got to teach him how to use the tablet. ;)

Although I saw something recently that said people have to learn drawing on paper first, or they never can on a tablet, because your nervous system has to learn the paper/pen manipulation first. He has drawn stuff with the mouse (http://senoritafish.deviantart.com/art/Ammut-by-Angus-30175013) before though.

The links talk about paneling, which might get him excited about setting up his own comic just like the pros. Maybe you can sketch out some simple panel patterns for him to consider.

I can believe that about drawing on paper first. Those fine motor skills need to be developed. And that true tactile relationship between paper and pencil is unique.

that's super cute! i wish dasan would draw... he's way more a numbers kid. he's all over that suduko stuff.

though i must admit i was really excited on the inside when he told me that he wanted to submit a short story to the gate magazine this year. last year i forced him to write poetry, so the fact that he WANTS to do it this year is really awesome :)

Sudoku?! Wow - I can barely do that stuff myself. John used to be all over until I got him a book for a gift, and now he won't touch them.

yeah i can't do the suduko at all. i'm way more of a word person than a number person... i'll take scrabble over that any day :)

Lizzie is my arty kid. She asks to draw all the time. C on the other hand, has to be beaten and tied to the chair to get him to color even the most simple pictures.

And my drawing style hasn't progressed since I was 5 either. I'm not holding outmuch hope at this point LOL

They all like to draw, and to be honest, Gareth is probably the best at realism, but that's not everything. Angus is the only one who comes up with these massive storybooks. Avalon likes to draw me in a dress (which I almost never wear. Wishful thinking, I guess), and she uses color the most -

You have such wonderful, creative children. They remind me of my family when we were kids :)

You must have had a happy time growing up! I'm amazed at their creativity, I hope they keep at it (which I'm trying to encourage).

I was really shy in school, but I had a great time with my brother and sister at home (except for when we were fighting, but I guess that was just normal kid stuff). We came up with all kinds of characters that we'd pretend to be or pretend to be interacting with. All of us are good artists. My sister's the one who's developed her artistic talent the most--she's a fantastic painter.

Perhaps he's in a hurry to get his ideas out on paper?

That's a big part of it - he's in such a rush to get it down on paper he's drawing as fast as possible. I'm going to have him check those links [livejournal.com profile] bakayaro_onna supplied above. Another part of it is that he's a bit lacking in the fine motor skills department, hence the lack of detail, but this can only be good practice.

Right now, he's sitting in the living room trying to draw me the tree from Halloweentown, because he has Nightmare Before Christmas on the brain.

Practise definitely makes perfect!
He has good taste, no?
