Tsunamis...
Dec. 29th, 2004 02:26 pmI am going to have to start avoiding news articles and websites for a few days because it is just making me too sad. Especaiially when I read that a third of the victims are children. And fishermen who left to fish in the morning and never returned; a risk all fishermen take every day they fish, but no one expected that none would come back.
Something I found at IMDB.com of all places:
Her boyfriend is still among the missing. Richard Attenborough lost three family members who were also vacationing there. Jet Li and his daughter are ok, after his hotel was flooded. Should I be relived that an old white guy, Arthur C. Clarke, whose books and science I have been reading for thirty years and lives in Sri Lanka, is ok, when so many others lost their lives? Well, I am. But all these people are comparitiviely rich and will probably be able to regain some sense of normalcy in their lives (not that I'm saying that money will erase grief - I know it doesn't). They can at least escape the hellish conditions at some point. Those who live there will be dealing with the effects of this disaster for years to come.
I can't even make a donation until next week, after payday.
Places to donate.
Something I found at IMDB.com of all places:
Supermodel Petra Nemcova is recovering in hospital in Thailand after being swept away by the tsunamis that killed more than 50,000 people in Asia on December 26. The Czech Republic Victoria's Secret model was holidaying in Phuket with her photographer boyfriend Simon Atlee when waves overwhelmed their beach hut. Nemcova clung to a palm tree for eight hours, according to her New York-based spokesman, and suffered several broken bones, including a suspected broken pelvis. From her hospital bed, Nemcova recalled her recent hell to the New York Post. She said, "Kids were screaming all over the place, screaming, 'Help, help.' And after a few minutes, you didn't hear the kids anymore."
