Of trains and trick or treating (Part II)

So we headed home, and while the kids put on their costumes, I carved one of the pumpkins, a white one my dad had purchased. I was a mad fiend with a bunch of little saw blades with plastic handles. While we were carving, I put some brownies in the oven for Gareth's birthday treat.
This particular gourd seemed suited to a kitty face...
The tiny bright one next to it was one Gareth insisted on trying. It was about the size of a softball, and he drew a smiley face on it. Problem was, he cut out all around the outline of the features, the eyes and the mouth, and wound up with one three-lobed hole. We put a candle in it anyway, and made a nice little lantern.
I was going to carve the big 80-pounder, I even drew out a design in my sketchbook for it, but I wound up not having enough time. It wound up going to visit Gareth's kindergarten class for most of the month of November, like a big orange pet.
Then costumes were donned and it was time to go trick or treating. To tell the truth, my camera batteries were still dead, and I actually took these about two weeks later. Yes, they're posed, but I think they had some fun doing it. They're a bunch of hams. Hooray for licensing. SpongeBob and Spiderman were not all that original, but I can think of worse role models (like Eddy from Ed, Edd and Eddy, who Angus wanted to be last year, but changed his mind on the last day).

I told Avalon to show off her tail...

...And Gareth to let us know it was really him...

My feeble attempt at kitty makeup - Cats has will not be getting a new make-up artist anytime soon...

When we went trick or treating, we only went around the two blocks closest to home, and yet somehow they managed to bring home a good 8 lbs. of candy! Good grief. They still don't quite get that they're supposed to yell "Trick or Treat" after the door opens, not before. Angus was pretty nervous of the couple of houses that seemed to have ghosts out front. One was rather elaborate; on sensing motion of people coming up the walk, scary music started to play, and gauzy ghost descended by extending its arms, from the rafters of the front porch.
After we got back, we put candles in Gareth's brownies,
and John lit them in typical John fashion...with a mini blowtorch....

...then Gareth blew all five of them out. He got to do this twice; Grandma brought another, fancier cake over the next Saturday, when he also got to wear the birthday you saw me wearing in an earlier post.

Brownies, a bit of candy and some hot chocolate later, it was time for bed, and they actually crashed fairly quickly. Birthday and Halloween over for another year. Gareth, at least, is not really into sweets, thank goodness.
