Mar. 22nd, 2003 11:41 pmI'm a bit sad to see that someone on my friends list has completely deleted her journal. Although I can't say I really knew her (she only commented here once), I always looked forward to her posts; they were fun, witty and usually made me think. I can't remember how I found her; just wandering around, I think, but I liked her writing and added her, and she almost immediately added me back. That's what I enjoy so much about LJ; that people allow me to peek into snipppets of their lives that are so much different from my own. Through her journal, I found some of you. I didn't agree with everything she wrote, especially her last few posts, but the world would be a very dull place if everyone agreed with me.
That people decided to harass her because she had a unpopular opinion (here, at least) is unfathomable to me. If something offends you, stop reading it! (Didn't I just say this recently? I'm a broken record.) This is one of those issues that you are not going to change anyone's mind on. I work with people on the other side of the issue, would it do me any good to scream at them every time I passed them in the hallway? No, it would just get me fired, and no one's mind would change. If anything, it would only make them the more staunch in their views while convincing them of the opposing view's wrongness, because look how crazy those people are acting!
Maybe the old rule about discussing politics, money or religion is best - which is why I didn't respond to it; nor could I had I wanted too. She had turned comments off - which says "I don't wish to discuss it", pretty loudly - she was stating her opinion, why she felt that way, and wanted her readers to know where she stood. To tell the truth, she had dropped hints before as to her leanings, so it shouldn't have been a suprise. My dad has the same opinion and is a lot more belligerent about it, and I have to live with him. Why is it that just because we are on the internet, any modicum of politeness just goes out the window?
This makes me sad. I'm missing a couple of bright spots out my week now, because everyone gets punished when some people act up. Which is how it usually goes.
