May. 13th, 2003 04:53 pmGnawing on an Gala apple that has a bad spot right up around the core; I'm trying to avoid it and trying to decide if it's affecting the taste of the rest of it. It's not, but I'm giving up on trying to navigate around the spot. Better an apple with a spot than the machine downstairs, I suppose.
Data summaries, data, data, data. If my favorite android were here he could do this in his head in about 30 seconds, How many boats made sardine landings last year? How many landings total? How many by each fishing gear? Purse seine, drum seine, hook and line, gill net, brail. How much mackerel caught incidentally to sardine? How much sardine incidental to mackerel? Sometimes I feel more like an accountant, than a biologist.
There was diversity training in the large conference room today. I went to the break room for a drink, and though the doors were closed, there was classical music coming out into to hallway. I stood there a minute trying to place it, and finally recognized it as Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams. I first heard this piece of music when Orange County had a British Festival a few years ago; one of the events was a concert of music by British composers, with Patrick Stewart as MC. This was one of the pieces; at the time, it struck me because the music is entirely by strings - there are no wind instruments at all. Patrick Stewart also narrated A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. How long ago was that? My mom was still alive because we went to the concert together. She liked the music, but I think she also started appreciating the good captain as well, that night.
Amazing how I can hook Star Trek up to totally unrelated things.
