I just heard Mr. Rogers passed away. I'm a little sad - I used to watch him as a kid. I always liked the way he came in and fed the fish, and was fascinated by the way the trolley went through a hole in his wall and came out in make-believe land. I think my two favorite characters were the cat and the owl that lived in the same tree, but I never liked the king - I thought he was a pompous ass even when I was six.
I remember watching one last summer, when he went to a factory where they made toilets. It was really very interesting. Shame on me, as an adult I had never even considered how something we use every day is made! But for a child, questions like that occur all the time.
After 9/11, a column of his really helped me try to explain to my kids what had happened. He explained that his mother had told him, that instead of dwelling on the disaster and the fear of what happened, "Look for the people who are helping. There are always people who help."
I wonder if that's why he decided to retire last year, if he knew this was coming. I'm sorry to hear it - he was a couple of years younger than my father.
