Courage the Cowardly Dog is so surreal at some times and wacky at others, full of weirdness like sea serpents who sing opera, a future world entirely peopled by bananas, and whales that swim through the sand, looking for their lost accordions. This particular ep, for instance. A sinister stone tower, crawling along with mechanical legs, shooting cannonballs that make people depressed. The villain, whose name seems to be a play on a depression medication, threatens to use the town of Nowhere as guiniea pig unless the mayor supports his research. If Dr. Zalost ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. Zalost, who must have had a terribly sad childhood, is constantly eating ice cream in bed in an effort to make himself feel better, and begging his companion, a rather deformed looking rat, to give him hugs. Meanwhile Courage's beloved Muriel is home making "Happy Plums," a dessert which will "make anybody happy." You can already see where this is going.

I love the colors in this one: the roiling purple sky, the glowing pink "happy" cannonballs Courage finally makes, even Zalost's green skin and red hair. Along with that is the soundtrack - they are trying to parody the kind of movie where the emotional music takes over from all of the actual sounds occurring. The music has a mournful oboe line that actually is kind of affecting.

Eustace gets his trademark lines "Stupid Dog," and "I'm gettin' me mallet," and Muriel's Happy Plums save the day, redeem the mad scientist and even reconfigure the rat (he turns into a crying baby rat). I always have to sit down and watch this one all the way through, even though it's a full half hour episode and I've seen it about 15 times.
