Jan. 13th, 2003 05:16 pmTickled to see that "The Señorita - California's Cleaner Wrasse" is the centerfold article in Outdoor California this month - The article says pretty much what is in my profile, although I thought the following was interesting.
I tried making a señorita icon, but it looks pretty crappy when reduced down to 100 pixels wide. I was thinking a little animated gif, but not quite sure how to go about it.
The ecological benefits of the señorita's feeding activities should not be underestimated. A kelp forest does not do well when the plants are heavily burdened with crustaceans or other organisms. And certainly no fish, where it lives in the kelp forest or anywhere else for that matter, does well when heavily infested by parasites. When cleaner wrasses were experimentally removed from a couple of tropical reefs, within two weeks, all other fishes were gone. Without the fishes, algae suffocated the reefs and it took years for them to recover.
