The second week of April, I had to travel for work to Portland OR. I really didn't have much opportunity to get too far away from the hotel right outside the airport (I'd almost say "within" the airport, as there were runways on either side). But after a Friday all-day meeting, we went to this place for dinner. It was fascinating, and I'd really like to come back and spend a weekend there. Apparently during the early part of the 20th Century, it served as a "Poor Farm" for the destitute. It was renovated in the 90's to become a B&B-type hotel, a winery, various brewpubs, movie theater, spa, and gardens that supply the Black Rabbit Restaurant.

The whole place has artwork everywhere, not only hung, but painted directly on the walls and even the plumbing. This is the door to the women's room outside the restaurant. Old ladies often wear skirts, and she is waiting for the bus.

Just to be fair - here's the men's room door.

Would've loved to have seen this concert - I bet it was a great setting for him.

hm. I see that they put that on the website. I was told it was a home for bad little boys. :)
Also, a few of the rooms are rumored to be haunted. We stayed there in one of the haunted rooms one night, but i did not see a single ghost.

Date: 2010-04-28 08:19 pm (UTC)Edgefield used to be a poor farm. It also was an orphanage and a reform school. It's adjacent to a county jail (work farm). I love the ballroom--what a gorgeous space! The gardens are great too. Haunted? Yep, I have friends who have experienced paranormal activity there.
