Avalon attending a birthday party at one of the last bowling alleys around here (along with ice rinks they seem to be going the way of the condor, around here at least). Nothing like a gaggle of squealing 2nd graders bowling in their pajamas. Also (funny if you live here), not only was there an Avalon, there was a Catalina, too.

Later, Angus wanted to try making dango, from The Manga Cookbook, used before for making these. Said comic/cookbook said we could substitute mochiko rice flour (from the local grocery store) for the two specialized types of rice flour in the recipe. Unfortunately, using the same flour/water proportions in the book did not result in dough suitable for rolling into little balls - it resulted in soup. We had to add the entire rest of the box to get it to near the right consistency. Still, we had fun rolling up all the dough and dropping it into boiling water to cook. These were supposed to be tricolor, but we also had no matcha to color the green ones. Supposed to be three for a skewer, but Avalon insisted on putting a toothpick in every single one of 'em.

We forgot to add any more sugar so they weren't as sweet as they should have been, but we liked them anyway. [livejournal.com profile] runsamuck thought they were too chewy and pronounced them undercooked. However, I think I've had them before and they're supposed to be like that. Whereupon, he decided, "Well, I'm never going to like them then." Good, more for us next time!

I suppose that should have occurred to me at the time, but it didn't. Even if it had, it wasn't my party, and at time, I hadn't had much coffee and "Ooh, pretty colors" was the only thing that registered. Forgive the lapse.

However, they were indoors, and to my knowledge none were released to fly away into the air and wind up in the ocean. As a matter fact, 3/4s of them were popped by little girls swatting each other with them and put in the trash by the time the party ended.

If we do happen to come into possession of any, they stay in the house - they deflate by the next day and then they go in the recycling, along with all the other plastic I can shove in there (and rescue from the trash because my semi-redneck spouse will not learn that a peanut butter container can be rinsed out).

I would think that balloons are probably a small proportion of the plastics and other undigestable materials that winds up in the ocean and could potentially be mistaken by animals for food, but you're right. It ALL needs to be kept out the ocean. You should see the LA River after it rains. You wouldn't believe all the styrofoam, plastic bags, etc.

Maybe we'll put a disclaimer on the next set of birthday invites - especially since we're more likely to have ours outside in the park.
