Two of my kids go to the same elementary school I did. In this spot, there used to be a mulberry tree. It was handy for third grade science projects where classes raised silkworms, watched them pupate and then got to see fat silk moths emerge from their cocoons. I liked the mulberries when I could reach them. The mulberry tree was there until last year, when the center finally went rotten and it was cut down. Made me sad to see that empty planter in the middle of the playground. Last fall, flyers were sent home asking for donations to buy a new tree. Sometime in December, this camphor tree was planted and a new planter built around it. I noticed while dropping the kids off today that it's completely dead.

Elementary School Mulberry Tree

Yeah I remember that tree too.
I remember playing in the planter under it w/ toys my friends and I brought from home. Also I remember that tree producing a lot of Mulberries that you could eat but weren't all that tastee. They would have been great in a jam or jelly I'm thinking.
Funny thing, the elementary school behind my house also has a big Mulberry tree also. However it stands on the apartment complex's property that I live in and hangs over the part of the schools play ground. Same berry same taste. Same squished red/purplish things on the ground & a tree full of birds during Mulberry season. Thanks for the memories Leeanne.

I like them - I think most of my friends thought they were poisonous. Funny, we had a guy come talk to our garden club who had all kinds of rare and tropical fruit trees in his backyard. He brought some mulberries from his tree that must have 4" long!! Angus thought they were pretty neat.

I think there were a lot of mulberries in Brisbane too. I remember nobody had a drier and everyone hung there clothes out to dry. I would forget to bring my clothes in at night and in the morning there would be big purple poop stains on them from the flying foxes - who also roosted in the banana tree near my trailer and squabbled all night.

Also still there - your third or four grade teacher, Mrs Shanahan, I think? Large lady, poofy blonde hair in a pony tail tied with a bow. Still there, still wears her hair the same way. Gareth says she's kind of mean.

I'm not sure what happened; they were watering it regularly and it had lots of new soil. It seemed to die awfully quickly. It's been replaced by a Moreton Bay Fig, the same tree as in the background (and in front of our house (http://senoritafish.livejournal.com/592594.html)). But I kind of miss the mulberries - and no more third grade science projects. <:(
