You know, I always used to identify with Nurse Chapel; I was that way with most of the males I liked. Spock was probably the first celebrity crush I had as a teen (when all my friends were probably buying Tiger Beat ). I was constantly being attracted to guys, often friends, who weren't interested, at least in that way, although I always tried to tell myself I'd rather have them as friend than not at all. Damn you Spock, for setting me up to fall for a string of emotionally unavailable guys...(Love this Bic Runga song, though)

I'm glad Majel got to play a stronger character in the next series; Lwaxana Troi was a crack-up...of course it always helps when you're married to the show's creator.

My friend Mike wrote me the following, although he said it was partially inspired by his father passing away several weeks ago, so this hitting him harder than he expected - "I'm really feeling the 'parade's gone by' feeling right now." he told me. *Hugs* Mike...

There are several people listed here who I hadn't realized were gone...

Most of that is from the first series.  I haven't listed all the countless behind the scenes folk, craftspeople, writers, actors and others who worked on either the movies or spin-off series who have joined The Great Bird of Galaxy in the great beyond. And I'm sure that a lot of people who have worked on Star Trek books, toys and other licensed merchandise have also kicked the bucket.

Every year, millions of dollars go to cancer or aids research, yet not a dollar is spent eradicating the deadly killer known as Star Trek.  When will people wake up? When?!

To this day I ship Spock/Chapel. All the cool kids ship Kirk/Spock, and that's fine, but I don't.

I only got into the fanfic for them in the last few years though, and mostly read one author. But I'm glad the fic is out there.

And she will be missed.

Yeah, most of them do. And the few cool kids playing in the het playground ship Spock/Uhura. *sigh*

It's funny- I haven't read too much Trek fanfic in recent years - most of the stuff I read was when people were still publishing paper fanzines (pre-internet). I should go find some.

I'm with you on identifying with Chapel. Although, I have to say it annoys me that so many people see her as a weak, simpering, Spock-chasing character based solely on that one scene where she goes all gooey over Spock because of that virus. She was stronger than a lot of people gave her credit for. I wish the writers had fleshed her character out more.

But then, I'm so glad she got to play Lwaxana. There's a cool story I heard about her getting the part: apparently, Gene came home one day and told her that he had a new part for her - and the best part was that she wouldn't even need to act... LOL. It gives great insight into what she was like as a person.

And that list... George Takei's closet and Shatner's hair. Hah.

Weak and simpering? Never. Nursing is a tough profession, and you don't go into it without a strong stomach and a tougher mind. In my mind, Chapel was a professional and did her best not to let however she felt get in the way of her job.

Re: the list - my buddy Mike has the greatest cynical sense of humor (and his way of coping, I suppose). I feel a trifle guilty getting a chuckle out of someone's death, but I hope people find a reason for one at my funeral, too.
