Sitting here in my ArcView class in Sacramento. I'm learning some software we don't currently have, so I'm going to have to talk someone into buying it when I get back. I'd also like us to get Photoshop - it's supposed to be our standard, but nobody in our office has it. Everyone just limps along with whatever software came with their cameral or scanner or whatever and nobody uses the same thing.

I am seriously tempted to sign up for a class or two at the community college, at least so I can get student discounts on software. I would really like to get my own copies of copies of Photoshop and Access.

Sacramento is really quite pretty - there are still a lot of fall leaves on the trees, which are much bigger here than in southern CA. It gets cold enough here that there are actually fall colors. At home, most trees just turn brown and ugly, except for a few, like liquidamber. Sometime I would like to come up for a weekend so I have time to actually look around. There are a few museums and such that I can't go to because I'm always doing something during the day.

Before I got on the plane Monday night, I stupidly forgot that I had a little Victorinox knife in my pocket. The lady said I could check it, but my backpack had already gone though. Oh well, the blade was bent anyway from where someone had tried to use it as a screwdriver. It's an excuse to get a nicer one. Just got to remember to take it out of my pocket next time.

Academic discounts of Photoshop run about $299, quite inexpensive compared to the commercial price. I can purchase software in our campus bookstore without having to show any kind of ID or proof I am a student or staff member. Basically anyone off the street could walk in and purchase software there.

If I were you I would check your local campuses to see if the bookstores sell software. You may be able to get a deal without having to sign up for classes.

Photoshop is a wonderful if sometimes frustrating program. Frustrating because there is SO MUCH about it I do not know and as soon as I get a bit of a handle on it a new version comes out and I have to go back and pull out the learning curve again.

Oh yeah, you can find earlier versions of Photoshop (I recommend 6) on eBay.
