Dog Beach Bluffs

On one of the rare days I drove to work (I try to bus as often as possible), I came home via Pacific Coast Hwy. As I approached the Bluffs in HB, I could see two small boats, life guard vessels, maneuvering around just outside of the surf. That did not look right, so I stopped in the bluff parking lot to get a closer look. March is in its out like a lion phase and there was a stiff, chilly breeze. When I got to the railing and looked down at the beach, I was suprised to see a small boat on the sand, with a group of people assembled near it, in addition to the boats outside the surf, there was a Jet-Ski going slowly patrolling back and forth. Now I started feeling like one of those people who slows down to look at an accident.


I hoped nobody had been hurt. As I watched, the jet ski approached one of the offshore boats, and then raced to the beach. I could see it was pulling a line behind it. The people on the beach tied the line off to the boat and the offshore boats slowly began to tow it off the beach.



The people down on the beach began dispersing as the boat moved offshore, with some of the lifeguards getting into their trucks and driving away down the bike path on the top of the bluff. I was still standing there watching the boat, when I heard, "Well, hopefully they don't bury it at sea..." Next to me was a man, also watching the boat, who looked at me and added, "That's my boat."

"Yikes, what happened? Too windy?" I asked. He told me they'd lost all their electrical power and then got blown onto the beach. He'd had four other guys with him; it was a scary situation, but luckily everyone was ok. I told him, good, I'd been thinking good thoughts.
