Hmm, there is either something around here making an extremely high-pitched noise on the edge of my hearing, or I'm getting tinitus - entirely possible given the stuffy state of my ears right now. Really irritating - almost like a dentist drill or sonic cleaner, but much, much higher. Feels like it's grinding around in the center of my skull....

I hope for your sake it's temporary! I have tinnitus bilaterally and know how annoyed you must be right now!

Try putting some headphones and music on--often that can mask tinnitus (well, noise...that's why you will sometimes see folks with tinnitus wearing hearing aids).

Thankfully it did go away, or at least I'm not noticing it now. Since I was a kid, I periodically get a sound like an electronic tone in either ear, but it usually goes away. This felt a little different. Poor runsamuck has tinnitis in both ears too; from being stupid as a kid and blasting the stereo, and working in machine shops and around meat-cutting saws for years.
