Wow. A storm that actually serious about dropping some rain on us. Good, 'cuz we can use it - I saw something in the paper the other day about Californians (at least souther Californians) needing to take water conservation more seriously. Well, I can use that as an excuse for not having anything growing in my yard right now - although I do want to get some xeriphytic/native plants going.

Avalon was invited to a birthday party earlier this week - when I opened the invite, my jaw dropped. They are taking all the girls invited to this place in Tustin, where all the little girls will have their hair styled and nails done, get to dress up, and then have cake and ice cream. That's ok, I guess, but they are also picking up each girl invited at their home in a freaking limo!! Tustin is about a half an hour's drive away. I'm just wondering how many girls are invited? I asked Avalon if this is someone she regularly plays with, and she replied, "Oh no, I never play with her." Is this one of those families where they are inviting the entire class, whether the kid really knows them or not?

I loved birthday parties and going to them when I was a kid. The only time I remember going somewhere though, was one time a bunch of us went rollerskating, and three or four friends went with me to the Alligator Farm. Usually no more than would fit in my parents station wagon. I just hope my kids aren't going to be disappointed that they don't get similar parties to the above from us. I spent more on Angus's party than I really planned and that was just a pinata and cake and ice cream in the park.

John says we are getting a reputation for giving gift cards for books. The parents like it, but he thinks they are getting fewer invitations from kids because of it. Well, if the only reason they're getting invited is because of what type of present they're bringing, then they don't need to be going to that party. >:p

the kids birthday parties around here are INSANE. i usually just stick dasan and the kids on the block in front of the video games for an hour and he's thrilled.

we actually have to go to a bday party tomorrow, but it's at fountain bowl and i love bowling so it shouldn't be so bad ;)

I liked the party one of Angus's friends had at Prehistoric Pets; that was pretty cool - but we couldn't afford it ourselves. Bowling sounds fun, and it's something both boys and girls can do. It bothers me when they're exclusive to one gender - although I know at certain ages they don't always want much to do with each other.

My kid's would be thrilled with video games too, but our most recent game platform is a Super Nintendo we got for a wedding present.

Dang.. that's an ostentatious party, isn't it? Unless there's only like 4 girls total in her class.

Sure seems like it to me. We did something similar for her birthday last year, at the little tea place in Seal Beach, but it was only her, her grandmother & cousin, and me.

OMG.
Book vouchers are an awesome gift...kids have enough toys and stuff mostly and you don't always know what the kid is into; books are something that can be kept for a lieftime! People are dumb.

Exactly, plus I don't run the risk of getting something inappropriate or the parents don't approve of.

I am dreading the day one of Avalon's friends give her Bratz dolls.

You have a point there too. I usually ask my kids what they play with at the other kid's house and get somethng along similar lines.

I take it you don't like Bratz dolls!
