I took these all in the space of half an hour right after lunch. When I came back to my desk, I could see it approaching from the north - then it struck. These poor birds (migrating whimbrels that have been hanging out on the lawn and the nearby golfcourse) were just about flying backwards.

The air was full of haze; there were a few spatters of rain but not enough to get the sidewalk wet.

heron hunkering

After a few minutes of this, all of the cars parked at the dog park behind our building pulled out and left. The great blue heron who'd been hunting gophers on our lawn hunkered down to wait it out. My co-worker came in from lunch and said she thought wind was going to rip the door off as she came in.

Luckily it didn't last too long - the end is in sight here. You can even see the mountains again.

About 45 minutes after the first pic. Note the palm trees behind the air traffic control tower are blowing the opposite direction than they were on January 8...
