senoritafish: (Do the Aquaman Butt-Dance!)

We did finally make it to Anime Expo. We really only strolled around the dealer's room and gawked at costumes. I was a little irked that the website said children 5 and under were free, and then when I got there, they told me, no it was two and under. They did let Avalon slide, but I still had to buy and admission for Gareth that I wasn't planning on. The plan was, I would go with the kids for a few hours, then come home and pick up John and we could see some panels and watch some things. I didn't realize until after I got home, though, that registration closed earlier, at 5 pm instead of 9 pm. I would have liked to stay longer, but the kids were getting tired - Avalon and Gareth both conked out on the way home.

People were so friendly, though - I was wearing my blue DBZ baseball shirt and I passed a black guy wearing the same one. We both pointed at each other, said "Same shirt," and then he grinned and held up his hand for a high five; I was obliged to transfer camera, bags and children's hands to the other before I could return it. ;) At a T-shirt booth, where I was selecting a couple of belated Father's Day presents for John (shirts with Captain America and Homer Simpson) the salesgirl admired my shirt and had to hug when she found we shared a favorite DBZ character (well, us and 75% of the fandom - I'm hardly unique in that respect). And I did get to say hi to one of the very talented artists I discovered at DA - GoblinQueeen, and got to see the originals of a couple of her pieces I already had favorited there (such as Free to Good Home). I wish I could have actually bought something from her - I would have, if I'd been able to come back.

A few pics of costumes --

The dealer room was sometimes difficult to maneuver around in with three small children. It was really crowded. The Funimation booth with the reason the T-shirt girl hugged me...

The kids with a figure of Alphonse Elric at the Funimation booth - Angus is wearing his eyepatch from Pirates of the Caribbean the night before.  He would have worn the earring too, but he left it at home.  And believe me, I did comb their hair before we left, honestly I did!

Ed, one among many (no braid). It was like every fifth costume.  And I have a ton of pictures of people's backs, it seems...

Ack! Toys! Covet, covet.  This booth had sets of chibi figures from every series imaginable. Most only about an inch high.  So cute.  I knew if I got any, somehow they'd all get lost...Left upper corner, second one down is a set of Inu Yasha figures...

No idea, although the woman looks Sailormoon-ish and the guy, vaguely lionish.  The big hair gave the impression of being about a third of his height. Just look at those shoes, though! I would kill myself trying to walk in those.

Not all cosplayers were of anime characters.  Predator strolls casually through the dealer's room.  Hey, you, you have some unfinished business in Sacramento, get up there pronto!

Blade and a Ghostbusters guy. There were also a bunch of Star Wars costumes, including the one I linked to a few posts ago, although I didn't see him.  They're part of a group that raises money for City of Hope, and visits children in hospitals.

Well the body may be lacking somewhat, but Lord Darcia's mask and headdress are perfect, I have no idea who the other two are...

This is my favorite.  I had just hung up from giving John a call, when Angus and Gareth grabbed my arm and said "Ed is sitting right over there, you have to go talk to him!"  Why they selected this particular Ed over all the others walking around, I have no idea, but they dragged me over, and they introduced themselves.  She thought they were cute, and of course I had to relate how Avalon had announced her intentions concerning Edward Elric some time ago.  She laughed and said "Unfortuneately, this Ed is wearing a bra." but insisted on posing for a picture with her.  She had Avalon clap her hands together as if she's practicing alchemy, too. Sweet kids.

The Inuyasha crew, from an upper balcony.  It was kind fun looking down on all the costumes.

Naruto guys sparring, one with a weird weapon/ball/thingie,

Same Naruto guy with giant holy (as in, it has a hole in it) sword, checking out the schedule...

No clue...(edit: [livejournal.com profile] bakayaro_onna says the guy in the center is Sohma Hatori from Fruits Basket, a series I've heard a lot about, but haven't seen)

Usopp Buu from One Piece (Thanks again, Onna); I couldn't remember his name.  I can't really get into that show.  Scary looking fanboy in the background, dressed up as Frodo, maybe?

Brothers Sesshomaru and InuYasha about to set into each other with their claws, same ones as above. These were some of the few InuYashas charas I saw actually being played by guys...

Collateral damage - from Sesshomaru and InuYasha fighting perhaps...

This guy was directly ahead of me in the Artist's Alley.  Again, no clue, but his wings were neat...

Last one going out the door.  Clueless again (ahh, Onna suggests he may be Cloud Strife anonymous tipsters say he is Tidus from Final Fantasy X), but his sword was cool - it was made of some translucent blue material that almost glowed a little.

(edit 11/8/05: Just curious - was a link to this posted somewhere? I've gotten a bunch of anonymous comments on this recently, when I posted it over four months ago! If you could let me know, dear anonymous, it would satisfy my immense curiosity...)

I mentioned Man-Faye the other day. This is a large hairy guy with a few days growth of beard, who likes to dress up as Faye Valentine just to disrupt cons, I guess. I've heard he's previously shown up and gotten thrown out because his costume was considered obscene (or that he's selling t-shirts without a permit). I found out a little more about him in another person's journal, about the fourth paragraph down (plus she's got much better pictures than I do).

Anyway, a fun time, if short, was had by all. I think next time I will get a pass for the entire time, and then I can just come and go as I please.

You got some great costume shots! *laugh* Yeah, I have my share of 'back' shots myself!

Hurray for Vejiita! I used to wear Vejiita shirts to cons! Now I wear Gravitation shirts and get hugs and squeals from little girls and young ladies who love my shirts and the series!

I think the guy in the last pic is supposed to be Cloud Strife from one of the Final Fantasy video games. The character gets a lot of uke business done to him in slash...

The One Piece guy is Usopp Buu. I get my OP info here: http://www.gumgum.org/main.html

I have seen those wings worn by someone else before at another con. Probably bought them at some costume shop. They ARE good wings. Do these look familiar?

http://www.ourwitzend.com/2005akon/02-sat/pages/2005ak_02sat-035.htm

This year, the male Sesshoumaru who has a decently pretty face did not show at the con. He might show up at the con in August, or maybe he has stopped doing the chara and sold the costume.

The Ed Elric girl was sweet! I think that's what I like about cosplay - if a person makes the decision to do it, they know they will be called on for photos with all sorts of folks and almost all of them do it in a pleasant manner.

Which brings me another of your comments - Yes! Con people are friendly! Total strangers talk to each other freely and laugh together. Everyone is gathered in one place to enjoy something they all love and that love just radiates out all over.

Weekend passes are best - you can come and go as you please. I need to purchase mine for the August con soon.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Yep, those are the same wings!

I'd been to Star Trek and science-fiction cons before, but this was my first anime con. Heh, as a matter of fact, I think the last time I visited the Anaheim Convention Center was the World SF Con in what? 1984? Eek!

The only problem with a weekend pass was that parking at the convention center was $9 a shot. Maybe next time, I'll have the parking along with the Disneyland pass and we can just take a shuttle over; it's right across the street.

Yeah, she was so nice. But if you want to see a million Eds in one place, you should check out this post (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fm_alchemist/2541113.html). Hee, hee. Armstrong is in there too! That was before we got there, though.

Only $9 a day? At A-Kon, it is $14 a day!

What a bevy of FMA folks on that other lj!

Eeks! It's enough to make me want to ride the bus! Or at least find other folks to carpool with.

Ain't it though? I'm sorry we missed 'em. The movies were funny, too.

Hey! I notice you have some pics of Venture Bros. characters on your site! Can I point people in [livejournal.com profile] venturebrothers at them?

Ah!

I recognize another character!

In the pic with the girls in black and white ruffles and top hats, in the middle is a guy holding a little yellow bunny. He has his hair over one eye. That's Sohma Hatori from Fruits Basket, one of my faves.

Here is the official anime pic.

Here is my recent drawing of the boy in kimono:

That's a very good likeness. I keep hearing a lot about that series - I'll have to check it out at some point. A family cursed to shape change, hmm.

Man, that Funimation site has gotten huge - I remember when it was just DBZ.

Heh, I think the person with no life is the one trolling four months back through my journal to leave hopefully irritating comments.

Thanks for the info! I have no clue about Final Fantasy charas. Glad you like the pics. Hey, was a link posted to this somewhere? This is the second comment I've gotten in four days and I posted this almost four months ago...
