Just what do I like about Cowboy Bebop's Jet Black? Actually I posted this in
cowboybebop almost a year ago. I just remembered it:
I’d love to see more of Jet.

He comes from Ganymede, a water planet, or at least it seems to be. His ship is a converted fishing boat, and both it and Hammerhead, his smaller craft, are capable of water landings. Maybe that ocean background seeps through the rest of his character and speaks to me.
My feeling is he's the glue that holds everyone else together on the Bebop. He grouses a lot, but it’s the same kind of stuff you get from your mother, because she cares about your wellbeing, and you're too busy rebelling to see it. While grumbling that you stole his money and he just wants it back, he’ll come and rescue you from whatever trouble you managed to get yourself into, and probably cook you dinner when you both get back. That he gets short shrift in the series, I suppose is because Spike’s backstory of involvement in the Syndicate and a love triangle is seen to be inherently more interesting.
I loved Ganymede Elegy, but I could see why Jet’s former girlfriend might have left him. He was younger then and maybe too overprotective of those he loved (and maybe a bit of a control freak?). Hopefully, he’s learned from his mistakes. He was certainly more compassionate with her current boyfriend than a lot of guys would have been (aside from the belt to calm him down). He has a finely-honed sense of honor, but does not seem to force it on other people. He has an innate kindness that he would rather not show, but it's obvious in the way he takes in strays (i.e. every other resident of his ship). I get the feeling he would not agree with legislation of morality.
I guess I’m at a place in my life where, although Spike is physically attractive enough, his nihilistic tendencies and emotional unavailability would cancel it out for me. Jet is older (actually he's a bit younger than I am), more stable, seems to be good around kids (he seems to have the closest relationship with Ed), and he’s not hard on the eyes, either (an aside – so what does he do to keep himself in that shape? You don’t keep that kind of muscle mass in low gravity without a lot of hard work!). Besides, how can you resist a guy who cooks, gardens, and does laundry? ;) He's got a very sexy, rumbly baritone voice (in Japanese and English - I like them both) too.

Then again maybe I just have a thing for bald authority figures. Patrick Stewart and Mitch Pileggi are pretty high on my list, too.
I guess I'd have to say Jet shares a lot of the same qualities as
runsamuck. He's a real life Jet (except he's an reformed bad boy instead of an ex-cop), and I don't deserve him.
