I wonder how long Meetup.com is going to last now that they are trying to charge fees for their service? I notice they were giving half off the regular fee until the end of April; that's now been extended until the end of the year! The organizer is expected to pay the fee, then supposedly collect donations from members at the meetup. Given a couple of lunches I've been to with large groups of people from work, I can tell you how well that's going to work.

I did attend a couple of LJ - Orange County meetups that were pretty fun; I met a few interesting people who are still on my friends list ( You know who you are. XD ). I'd love to go to more of them; unfortunately, it seems like weekends are getting filled with stuff, and it's harder to get away to attend them, while weeknights are filled with making dinner and homework that's due on Friday, and it's already too easy to get behind.

So far, just about every group I was a member of has lost its organizer; keep getting cheerleader-type emails saying "Don't you want to volunteer?" I had signed up to be one myself, but since I was the only member of the group (I rationalized I'd actually go if anyone else RSVPed) I certainly was not going to pay $9 a month for just me, and it's a fandom I don't follow quite as closely anymore. I suppose I wouldn't mind contributing a dollar towards a larger group's fee, but most of the time I couldn't afford to buy anything wherever the meetup was held - unless it was a coffee place. I guess they weren't making enough from venue kickbacks after they decided to let Meetup groups meet outside of restaraunts.
