Oct. 18th, 2004 02:34 pmGot to work this morning with a bunch of leftover spider plants, angel's trumpets and a few others from the flower show/plant sale on Saturday to put in the breakroom (free to good homes). As I was cleaning up some spilled planter mix, VT came and told me the ground floor had gotten flooded over the weekend. The other half of the building has an atrium with a few jacaranda trees, planters and a small fountain; apparently the drains must have gotten clogged and with the heavy rain over the weekend, the water backed up in there about six inches deep. You can see mark around the walls where the water was. It leaked into the building under the doors, wet all the carpeting in the other office and came down our hallway, which, luckily, is linoleum, but in a couple of storerooms stuff got wet. One person lost an archive of paper data sheets (data already entered, I hope), and another had a bunch of t-shirts used as rewards for a rockfish tagging program get stained. He was giving them away, because even if the stains came out when washing, he couldn't give them as rewards. So I grabbed two.
The water didn't make it all the way down the hall to the wet lab, but our microscope room had a couple of big puddles in it. There was nothing sitting on the floor, so I think we're ok there. There is a steel storage cabinet, but the bottom shelf was several inches above the floor, so I think the only damage might be if it starts rusting later. I'll open the doors and let it air out.
Come lunchtime, I noticed that the larger potted plants and nearly all of the spider plants were gone, and someone had left a dollar for one of them. They were supposed to be free but I must have left a price tag on one of them - I'll have to find out who left it and return it to them.
More about the flower show later...
