If you happen to be looking for song lyrics, avoid LetsSingIt dot com like the plague.
I think that's where all this adware crap on my computer came from. Also something nasty called BKDR_BERBEW.L, which likes to steal passwords. Thanks
dipster, for turning me on to Housecall, which I've been running regularly. It keeps finding stuff that Spybot, AdAware and Norton are not finding, however, I think my machine is still not completely clean. I am still getting pop-ups, and now IE is putting up "please wait while this page loads, and in the meantime, look at this ad..." (the URL at the top is www.ads234.com) on websites that I know perfectly well do not have ads on them - like the link from my LJ profile to my friends page.

Date: 2004-08-24 08:56 am (UTC)A few popups, but as long as it doesn't put a bunch of crap on my machine I'm happy.

Date: 2004-08-23 07:14 pm (UTC)To do this, create a text file named HOSTS (no extension) in the directory \windows\system32\drivers\etc
The file contents should look this:
ads234.com 127.0.0.1
www.ads234.com 127.0.0.1
Basically, what this does it point those "pages" to your own machine which doesn't have those files, and causes them to give you the 404 (page not found) error.
You can add more addresses to the file later as you come across pages like that.

Date: 2004-08-24 11:52 am (UTC)There already was a "Hosts" file with a bunch of URLS in it. So I added those to the bottom (the number was in the first column, rather than visa versa). Now the ad page still comes up anytime I click my friends link, but the URL is now:
http://64.95.76.7/inBetween.aspx
I added that as well, but it is still coming up.
(Dipster, I know you've been helping out of the kindness of your heart, but I hope I'm not being a bother...Thanks for the tips and I was mostly just bitching)
