Ok, I always thought I was fairly hip, but will someone please define "emo" for me? I gather "emotional" from context, but when did it become a music genre? And who falls into that category?

For that matter, when did stuffed toys start being called "plushies?"

Emo: whiney music, essentially goth with less black clothing. Usually moderately punkish.

Plushies: I assume you're not referring to the people who like to have sex with stuffed animals?

It's funny, I only became aware of Furry subculture since I started LJ. After reading more about it, I almost felt like I've been on the outskirts of it without knowing it was there. My husband even assigned animal totems to each of our kids. Although, no, I was not referring to plushophilia nor am I ready to run out and embrace the lifestyle (not that I have any objection to either).

Anywhere I see stuffed toys for sale, especially online, or when people are talking about them, they are usually referred to as plushies. Maybe it's more usual when they are being marketed to adults as collectibles?

Stuffed animal sounds like something from a taxidermist's shop. I think that's why they started calling them plushies. That plus sometimes it's not an animal but a character from kids show.

Here's a pretty decent description of "emo."

Be apprised that almost anyone you hear use the term emo these days is talking about what the aforementioned website refers to as "post-emo indie rock" or what other calls emo-pop.

Hmmm, I guess I'm more out of the loop than I thought. I only recognize a couple of those bands.
