And on another note, if you live in California, Saturday June 12 is

Get Out There and Fish on Saturday’s Free Fishing Day

A common adage declares that the worst day of fishing is better than the best day of practically anything else. Therefore, on Saturday, June 12, California offers that opportunity to anyone who wants to cast a line as it presents the first in a pair of Free Fishing Days this year.

On this Saturday, and again on Sept. 25, the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) waives the requirement for a fishing license for anglers 16 years and older on all freshwater and ocean waters. All other fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, fishing hours and stream closures, remain in effect.

California’s Free Fishing Day coincides with the National Fishing and Boating Week that runs through June 13. The event is an annual celebration designed to increase public awareness of the joys of recreational fishing and conservation of the state’s fisheries resource.

There are an estimated 44 million recreational anglers in the United States, based on surveys conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. According to the 2001 survey, California, Florida and Texas enjoy the highest number of recreational anglers. In California, the survey said, 2.4 million anglers enjoyed fishing, with an average 11 days per year spent by each of them enjoying their hobby.

To help those first time anglers, DFG’s Fishing in the City and the tackle loaner program sponsor clinics at sites across the state. The programs are part of the Department's Urban Fishing Program, which began in 1993 and serves Californians living in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Sacramento metropolitan areas. For maps of fishing locations within the program, go to www.dfg.ca.gov/coned/fishcity.html.

On Free Fishing Day in the Bay Area, DFG offers a free clinic at Lake Cunningham in San Jose. The clinic includes 45 minutes of instruction on how to fish. For information on clinics, fish stocking or school-based programs, call (415) 892-0460.

In Los Angeles County, DFG will sponsor the Annual Youth Fishing Event at the Cerritos Park Lake. This children’s event is co-sponsored with Supervisor Don Knade, Los Angeles County Park and Recreation Department, the city of Cerritos, and the Cerritos Rod and Gun Club. For information about the event, call (562) 342-7151.

Sacramento area new anglers will find help getting that line in the water on Free Fishing Day at William Land Park. Along with the clinic, there will be free loan of rods, bait and tackle. DFG stocks the pond with catfish. For more information, call (916) 358-1644.

With the exception of the two free fishing opportunities, anglers must possess a valid 2004 sport fishing license, priced this year for California residents at $32.80. Short-term licenses are also available for residents and non-residents at reduced rates.

Lest you think the two seem mutually exclusive, I probably first acquired my love of the ocean from my dad and Grandma taking me fishing and to the tide pools in Laguna Beach.
