As I was putting my stuff in the Trooper to go to work, I heard what sounded like the repeated double beep of a digital alarm clock. I looked around, trying to figure out which of my neighbors had a window open, or was mad enough to keep an alarm clock in their backyard, when the sound segued into the call of sparrow.

We have some talented mockingbirds in our neighborhood. I've also heard them imitating another neighbor's cockatiel quite accurately.

My father swears to this day that he taught one to whistle Yankee Doodle when he was a kid. I tried that for years when I was little, but had no success. 40's era Oxnard was a much quieter place - the mockingbirds then must have been bored.

Sometimes the starlings which hang around make ringing phone noises. :)

I've heard you can actually teach starlings to talk.

There's been a huge flock hanging around the trees by my office building the last few days. They make a hell of a racket.

I've heard that too. Noisy buggers, aren't they!
