A fisherman had turned in a tagged sablefish (sometimes known as blackcod) to the office last week. He had caught it off Catalina Island. These are deep water fish that usually taken by large semi-conical traps made of rebar and netting. The fisheries for them, like many fisheries, can be highly contentious. After much searching, and asking around, ER found it had been tagged by the Canadian Sablefish Association three years ago, off British Columbia.

Wow, I had no idea sablefish were that mobile. That's pretty cool. We had previously been quite impressed to find a tagged leopard shark that had migrated from San Francisco Bay to Santa Monica Bay (after 15 years).

(what's a sablefish?)

We biologists are easily excited.

Edit: sometimes we're prety lame, too. "These are deep water fish that usually trapped in very deep water."?! What was I thinking!
