Or, linguistics according to 12-year-olds.

Gareth: Don't Californians speak English properly?
Me: I've heard some people say we don't have an (American) accent.
Angus: No, only people from England speak English properly!
Gareth: Are you sure? Because the phrase "beans on toast" really shouldn't exist.

Now, now, when I was in Australia, people were horrified when I made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Seriously though, I had far less culture shock in Australia than I did when I moved to New England.

My mom eats beans on bread. I don't think she even bothers to toast it.

John mentioned he's eaten beans on buttered bread, so toast isn't too far of a stretch. Although eggs and beans are right out! Xp

Do yours have beans in them? I always though that was eggs with salsa. Although I think I've seen it with chili...

They usually come with black beans here. Maybe just a Texas thing?

Australians eat Vegemite. THEIR ARGUMENTS ARE INVALID. :D

I remember they were horrified when we were in England and wanted syrup on French toast (which they didn't have anyway). OMG MIXING SWEET AND SAVOURY!

Actually, I don't hate Vegemite. It's salty and yeasty, but spread very thin it's not bad. Like soy sauce, but solid. My landlord while I was there had a grilled peanut butter and Vegemite sandwich every day for a snack.

Heh, I remember some older family friends who went to Europe and Norm, who lives on iced tea, had the worst time trying to get someone to make him some.

About the only thing I haven't been able to eat from another country so far (not that I've been to many) was the cod testes miso soup I was served when I was an observer on a Japanese cod longliner, in the first couple of days of the cruise. For some reason the same soup later with cod roe (eggs)instead didn't faze me. They wanted to make me American food, but I didn't want them making special meals just for me.

You're sort of taking a risk when anyway you have them do "American" food. I've had "American style" meals in Japan that are like, uh, what planet is this America on? :D

Anyway, for me half the fun is going somewhere and eating the cuisine.

Hahahaha!

Beans on toast with cheese melted on top is my most favourite kind of comfort food. It's amazing!

I like chili with cheese melted on it. And maybe some chopped tomatoes. Similar but absent the toast...
