senoritafish: (Angus HP Harry costume)

So, Angus has decided, on a few viewings of reruns (seen fairly often in this household because my father recently became a fan), that he's soured a bit on Avatar: The Last Airbender because he didn't care for the ending.* Turns out that at 12, he's a total Zutara shipper. He decided to come up with his own solution. After viewing a few Kaput & Zosky episodes on YouTube (to jog his memory - it hasn't been aired in some time), he announced his latest comic book project is an ATLA/Kaput and Zosky crossover.

(Kaput & Zosky being another Nicktoons animation no longer being aired - a French import by way of Canada, I believe - about two bloody-minded bean-shaped aliens who go from planet to planet attempting to conquer them, usually being abysmal failures at it. It has a very simple, stylized art style, which I very much like, but it's very different from ATLA.)

I chuckled a bit when he informed me what he was working on, saying something like "You're mushing those two together?" - whereupon he got rather bristly and demanded why not? No, no, Angus, I only thought the juxtaposition was interesting and I never would have thought of combining those two particular series. On our walk down to the pier yesterday, he was running various ideas past me, including how to get rid of Aang, and he had totally forgotten that Zuko had a significant other as well ("you know, the gloomy girl who sighs all the time?" I joshed him as he squinted, trying to remember). I told him just having KnZ murder Aang seemed kind of mean, especially considering comedic content of both shows (and given the usual failure of Zosky's plans for world domination) - but I'm trying not horn in too much on whatever he comes up with. ;)

So far in his opening pages, he has:

  • Kaput & Zosky crashing their ship nose first right between Katara and Aang during their final series-ending smooch, forcing them to jump apart.

  • Aang foisting them off on Zuko when they ask to see the leader (probably so they can try to krisperize him - and sneaky Aang is sneaky...)

  • When asked why they want to see the leader, KnZ reply, "So we can haul him out to a dark alley have tea with him and talk planetary leadership."

He has a couple of original characters as well, who seem to make an appearance in most of his stories. They're a pair of tsukumogami (he read about these entities in a school library book) in the form of a teapot and an umbrella, and they usually show up sooner or later to comment on the action.

Hee. I think he has a good start.

I need to go pick up another ream of typing paper as he's drawn this all on lined notebook paper intended for homework. At least he's using frames now and not one image per sheet like he started out with.

(I'm not immune to crossovers - here's a Kaput & Zosky/Fullmetal Alchemist doodle I did quite a long time ago...)

*I'm not all that fond of very end either, even though it was telegraphed from the very beginning. I can't quite get past the kids' ages. Maybe I'm just a very late bloomer, but 13/14 (all right, all right, 130 for Aang, but he didn't do any growing while he was in suspended animation) seems awfully young to be what appears to be settling down with your life partner. Although it does tickle me a bit that Aang is still looking UP at Katara - how often is the girl the taller one, in anything from Hollywood? Seriously, with the possible exception of Zuko, none of the main characters seem to have even gotten to their full growth yet. When Sokka and Katara are shown with their father, they aren't even as tall as his shoulders, so unless their mom was really tiny, it seems like everyone still has some growing to do.
