We should change his name to Lucky...
Oct. 10th, 2003 12:08 pmWe noticed yesterday that Stimpy had a wound on the back of his rear leg, but it wasn't until last night we realized how bad it was. I guess he'd gotten an abcess from a fight, and it had started draining. However, he's been licking and worrying at it, and now there's this gigantic hole as big as a fifty-cent piece on the back of his leg, and a smaller one on the front of his thigh as well.
He spent the night inside, so I could drop him off at the vet on my way to work. Unfortunately, Gareth decided to go outside and left the door open. John managed to catch him again when he came inside to eat, and took him over to the vet's office, where they were kind enough to take him in. They'll let us know later what's entailed, but he's most likely going to need surgery. I hope we can pay for it - if we max out our two remaining credit cards we can cover about $200 of it.
At least it's not a holday. The last couple of times this cat has had an emergency, it's been on a holiday, and we've had to take him to the animal emergency room in Fountain Valley. Expensive.
Anyway, I hope he'll be ok. For a neutered male, he gets in enough trouble for a tomcat.

Date: 2003-10-10 01:34 pm (UTC)Unfortunately, Stimpy tends to hide when he gets hurt, and we don't always find out how bad it is until later. He lost most of his tail because he had hurt it (or someone hurt him, grrr), and was hiding in the back of a cupboard. We didn't even know where he was for three days, and by then it had gotten infected and had to be amputated.
I know he'd be safer as an indoor kitty, but it's almost impossible to keep him inside.
Yeesh, good luck
Date: 2003-10-10 03:53 pm (UTC)Our black cat, Smudge, had an abscess a couple months ago, on the side of his head. His face blew out 200% on that side, poor little bugger. Cost us about $150 (Aust) to get it drained & cleaned up.
