senoritafish: (That's Ms. señoritafish to you!)

I am having the worst luck picking boats to sample the last two days. Yesterday, I needed squid, but the boat ahead of the squid boat had 150 tons of huge Pacific mackerel. That's a lot of fish; the average load size is around 30 tons. I did take some sardines from it for the Health Department - it's rumored Pseudonitzchia, the plankton that causes domoic acid poisoning in birds and mammals, is showing up again. There have been red tides for at least the last month off Huntington Beach (they can also cause that lovely blue phosphoresence [livejournal.com profile] otana mentioned awhile ago, although Gonyolax is often more responsible for that and for killing fish as well, from a toxin and oxygen depletion of the water, but it rarely affect other animals besides fish).

Anyhow, the mackerel boat (it's the same boat you might have seen on Fear Factor last week, if you watch that kind of crap) took from 6 am to 1pm to unload, and before the sqid boat started, I had to leave becasue I was off, and we're not allowed any overtime. Today I managed to pick another boat at another dealer starting at 6am again that stopped completely because they ran out of bins to put the fish in. It's been about 2 hours and I’m still waiting. I have my fish sample already, but I'm supposed to watch the entire load. Gah! Sammy, the wieghmaster, is pissed because he paid $70 for a banquet this evening, that he's not going to get to go to, because the boats are taking so long to unload. He figures he'll be here until 10 pm - and he started with this company because they treated him better!

I almost missed getting a squid sample; I had gone to the grocery store to get a snack while I was waiting for the one business to get started again. When I came back, I noticed a bunch of squid lying on the ground under the pump at the business next door. I peeked inside and noticed there were several bins full of squid and ice, so I ran back the truck to get a bag and my dip net. I just managed to get some as they were hauling the bins out the back to put on a truck.
