Avalon attending a birthday party at one of the last bowling alleys around here (along with ice rinks they seem to be going the way of the condor, around here at least). Nothing like a gaggle of squealing 2nd graders bowling in their pajamas. Also (funny if you live here), not only was there an Avalon, there was a Catalina, too.

Later, Angus wanted to try making dango, from The Manga Cookbook, used before for making these. Said comic/cookbook said we could substitute mochiko rice flour (from the local grocery store) for the two specialized types of rice flour in the recipe. Unfortunately, using the same flour/water proportions in the book did not result in dough suitable for rolling into little balls - it resulted in soup. We had to add the entire rest of the box to get it to near the right consistency. Still, we had fun rolling up all the dough and dropping it into boiling water to cook. These were supposed to be tricolor, but we also had no matcha to color the green ones. Supposed to be three for a skewer, but Avalon insisted on putting a toothpick in every single one of 'em.

We forgot to add any more sugar so they weren't as sweet as they should have been, but we liked them anyway. runsamuck thought they were too chewy and pronounced them undercooked. However, I think I've had them before and they're supposed to be like that. Whereupon, he decided, "Well, I'm never going to like them then." Good, more for us next time!
