He makes boxes out of a single piece of wood so the all the grain lines match up where each piece comes together (although I think told me he put the lid on the wrong way on this one). The wood is called curly maple, and the camera does a poor job of showing how it changes in the light. The lighter streaks perpendicular to the grain actually make the wood look as if it's wavy instead of a flat surface. It's really pretty.

And he sands them until they're so smooth, you can just sit and pet them, they feel so nice. ;)
