Spock's Beard?
Aug. 14th, 2003 04:05 pmJohn has been doing some cleaning (a lot of cleaning actually, the house is cleaner than it's been in years) and found a favorite tape of his from before we were even dating, It was a group called Toy Matinee, and he asked to look them up and see if they'd done anything else. I was only able to find reference to the single album and one of the band members has passed away, so no more from them, I suppose. Sad, because it was good music. I'll have to get the CD for John to replace the tape.
While I was looking them up on Amazon, I happened to notice the list farther down on the page about "People who bought Toy Matinee also bought:" The first item on the list was Spock's Beard.
Spock's Beard?!
Well, being a Trekker before all else (as far as fandoms, anyway), I had to pursue this. That particular Spock was most intriguing, so in his honor, I clicked on the link. I found a group that has put 10 albums! How is it that I'd never heard of them? I selected one at random, and the reviews sounded fairly favorable. "A combination of Rush, Yes, and early Genesis," one reviewer said. Sounds like something John might like as well. There was a link for an mp3 download. Hmmm. Not bad at all, I like the a capella harmonies, but a little more harsh guitars than I really like.
How the heck did they get that name? According to their website:
John would have to hear it at deafening volumes before he could decide, I think. Maybe I'll give them a try. They certainly seem interesting.
I believe further investigation is necessary...*raises single eyebrow*

"(We) were having this really weird night out one night, just one of those bizarro David Lynch type evenings. Al said "wow, it's like we're in a parallel universe. It's like Spock has a beard. Wouldn't that be a funny name for a band, Spock's Beard." That was about 89 or 90. Then when we were choosing names, around 92, Al made this list, like 2 pages of names. We all voted on them. He snuck Spock's Beard in as a joke, and it won."

I love men's harmony a capella but the guitars do not sound very pleasant.
