Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour...
May. 5th, 2007 10:19 am(backdated from May)

This is an annual self-guided tour through private gardens in Orange County and Long Beach. It used to be run by the owner of a neat little garden center to raise money for a women's shelter where she had once had to take refuge herself. She passed away several years ago, but so many people were inspired by her work, her friends continue to organize the tour. It's really neat to be able to see some people's backyards - you'd never know how gorgeous they are from the street - especially the one above, a tiny garden behind an apartment building in downtown Long Beach.

Clematis are not supposed to grow in Southern California - but there's three of them in this picture (the purple, white & purple, and lavender star shaped flowers in the center).

Flower bed - har har!

Another lovely one behind an apartment building. The guy who created it looked like he would be more at home in repair shop; he smoked like a chimney and was missing a few teeth. But he made this beautiful yard - it was actually a bit cutesy.

Donna is in my garden club, and says she worked for 10-hours a day for a couple of months to get ready for this tour (her yard already looked fantastic before she started). She has this great water feature, but raccoons and blue herons keep eating her koi. Her turtle laid eggs in one of the flower beds.
More tour pictures here..., although of course my photos don't do any of them justice.
