Vicarious Comic Con
Jul. 22nd, 2003 02:11 pmI've always entertained the notion of going to the San Diego Comic Con - my friend Mike makes an annual vacation of it, and my office mate V. goes for a day or so. But I never remember until a week or two before, and I haven't planned ahead, and therefore no time or money.to go. Not that I'm a big comic collector - I've always wanted to, but my extra money always went to Star Trek memorobilia, and not much of that. Now, what extra money? I have to content myself with the occasional Tick back issue. I continue to be fascinated with all the characters, though. I consider it modern mythology, and I always liked the ancient ones of every culture.
V. and her husband went again this year, and poor V. apparently had the con experience from hell. They had waited too long to book hotel rooms and there were none available, so they decided to commute from OC. Parking was nigh unavailable near the place though, so her husband dropped her off and went to find a place. While she was buying her mimbership, V. misread the prices and thought that the two day pass was still $60 while a single day was $25, so she opted to just get the one day pass and just buy another one the next day. When she met up with her husband, she noticed his badge was different. He had bought the two day pass and it was only $50. Friday was uncrowded and there was no problem getting in to any of the events.
Saturday, however, was a different story. Whether it was because of quite a few big name stars there for movies soon to open (Angelena Jolie and Hugh Jackman were on the list) or it was better advertised - I heard several radio commercials for it while driving to work - it was busier than either of them ever seen it. They parked and hubby went right in while V. tried to find the line for her ticket. She did.
It was a Freaking MILE long!
Literally. It snaked out from Convention Center, completely past Seaport Village (a pseudo-New England village/shopping center near the harbor) and into an adjoining park. She got blisters on her toes just getting to the end of the line, and then got a sunburn waiting in it for 3 Hours! She completely missed stuff she wanted to see, and was nearly in tears by the time she got in. When she finally met up with hubby, he had completely finished everything he had come there to see, but at least took her backpack, bought her a nice lunch, and found some band-aids for her poor toes. There was furher hell in that several things she wanted to see were too full to get into, and nearly didn't get a signing she wanted because the hall was kicking everyone out - they were about to close in five minutes.
She reccommends presale tickets, going on weekdays, and early hotel reservations for next time. Something to keep in mind for next year.

Date: 2003-07-24 04:55 pm (UTC)I am still kicking myself that I didn't get the originals when I was back in New Hampshire when it first came out. The comic store near me in Dover had big blue cardboard cutout all over the place, and I was thinking "The Tick? That's kind of a reach, isn't it?" Just kicking myself.
Disney needs to get off its fat mouse can and put the animated series on DVD. They probably forgot they own it. You've signed

You've signed <a href=” http://www.petitiononline.com/dvdtick/petition.html”>the petition</a>, right? Right. Good <lj site="livejournal.com" user="li_kao">. Not that it'll do any good, but it can't hurt. :)
