"Kid gloves" generally means to handle something with delicacy and tact; I wasn't aware that erethizontidid rodents were particularly emotionally sensitive. However, they are prickly. And a prickly human is defined as being troublesome, vexatious or easily irritated.
This is why John always used to give his mom a cactus for Mother's Day.
