My supervisor just came over and said he and the program manager want to talk me about being the Department representative on the Coastal Pelagic Species Management Team, an interagency entity providing data and input mainly for management of mackerel and sardine fisheries. K., who was the chair, just left us to work for the feds. I kind of assumed that D. would be selected since he's a senior and the CPS mandate coordinator, and I am two levels below him as a mere biologist, but maybe he's got too much on his plate. A. was also in the running, but she also left the Department and sent an email to R., the program manger, recommending me! While it's comforting that people think I would be able to do the job, it's also scary as hell. They may not actually be considering me for the chair, though - I would hope not. I think the team itself has to decide that.
However, as my supervisor said, it is a growth opportunity, and I need to do more of that. Since many of the promotional positions to associate biologist have been eliminated as people left, and we just got notice that there will be a hiring freeze until June 2005 (!), probably my only opportunity for a promotion is if they decide to promote me in place (i.e. doing the job I am now, with more added responsibility). To be honest, I've been reluctant to try for one because there wasn't a position I was interested in, and it means less time in the field for me, more added stress, and probably more dealing with angry fishermen.
Sigh. I'm justnot an ambitious person.
