May. 9th, 2005 05:57 pmPleasant Mom's Day - John had been busily working on something in the garage all week - and Avalon actually blurted something out that I pretended not to hear. He'd let her see it accidentally and of course, three-year-olds aren't the best secret keepers. John let me sleep in (instead of his normal bugging me for coffee-and-toast ["because it tastes best when you do it"]) and made coffee and pancakes. The kids climbed up on the bed and gave me their presents they'd made in school - Gareth a card with a big flower on it, and Angus some "stained glass" made of waxed paper and flower petals - both with their pictures in the middle.
The thing John had been working on in the garage turned out to be a wooden shark kit - actually something his Grandmother had given me and he decided to put together as a present from the kids. Apparently, the snap out pieces were rather rough edged, so he spent quite a bit of time smoothing them down and then putting a clear coat on it. I'll bring it to my office tomorrow.
And he found a pewter pin of a cat wearing a chef's hat holding a tray containing three fish - I probably would have not got it for myself, but he was thinking 3 fish=3 kids, he's a chef - it fits. When I look at it that way, it's very sweet.
I spent a bit of Mother's Day watching the Escaflowne movie DVD I bought a couple of months ago and haven't had a chance to watch. Although I probably should have been watching Irresponsible Captain Tylor so I can return it to Netflix. Beautiful music (it came with a soundtrack CD which I've been listening for a couple of weeks now), beautiful artwork, but I was getting a bit exasperated with the main character, Hitomi.
I swear she asked the first two about fourteen times. Maybe the subtitles were badly translated or something, but sheesh. I guess I am just used to stronger female characters. Now I'm going to have to look for the series, because there were so many more interesting characters that were barely touched on. What is Melerna a princess of? What's Sora's story? Merle's? Anything at all about Allen of the bee-yoo-ti-ful hair! (Whose voice, I noticed, was dubbed by the same voice actor who did Vejita, at least for the first couple of seasons - sounds totally different!)
Another thing that occurred to me: In just how many anime does the male lead threaten to kill the female character when they first meet, then they wind up together anyway? This does not strike me as a healthy way to start a relationship.
And I hope all the moms on my list had pleasant day, too.

"Where am I? Who are you? What do you mean? What's a Wing Goddess? Why are you shoving that sword in my face? Why are you kidnapping me? Why am I asking all these stupid questions instead of trying to find out or listening when somebody tells me?"
