My garden club is having a flower show for the first time in about four years, and I am part of the committee. We've been having meetings on Saturdays to get prepared for it. I've been put in charge of registering people, which means I have to make sure I take not only everyone's registration form, but also their cards for each item they're entering, and set up a list of each item entered in each class by each person (ie: Horticulture - flowers, vegetable, potted plants, dish gardens and Design - Flower arrangements, large, small, teacup, table setting). I was thinking I might just set up the laptop and enter it that way. I also need to set up a guest book for visitors.

I'm not going to have much to enter myself. I don't think my one rose bush is going to bloom by the 16th. The pumpkin, and maybe some New Zealand spinach, although I feel like I'm cheating a bit when I enter that. My parents planted it probably 15-20 years ago and it comes up all over the place like a weed. I don't even do anything with it. I don't know if the cosmos will last that long - they're pretty ratty looking now. And design? I'll probably try with what's available at the grocery store, but really, flower arranging isn't my thing. Plus if I do more than one, I won't get any sleep the night before. We set up the night before at nine, and then I have to be back at 7:00 am for registration.

I also have go through my CDs and pick out some music for background. The theme is "Le Petit Jardin," however you want to interpret that. Last time we did this, it was just before 2000, so the theme was "From Lace to Space." and we picked titles for the classes that reflected the 20th century. That seemed a little easier. This time, the titles are just French, so I guess things are just supposed to look European? Ah well, I'm not going to worry about it.

If anyone in my area wants to come, it's free and it'll be open to the public from 11:00-4:00, Saturday Oct. 16, at the Sea Aira Mobile Home Park, West Clubhouse, near the corner of Warner and Springdale in Huntington Beach. There'll refreshments and a plant sale, as well.
