Feb. 6th, 2004 11:38 amSomeone's UPS is going off. Most of the ones everyone has are at least four years old and the batteries are wearing out. I replaced some of ours last year, but now with the budget, I'm not sure they'll let us. My own didn't need it at the time, and it's now died. Our network guy told our office manager they were obsolete because all our networked PCs backup to the network. I'm dubious, however. The only time I've seen any sign of this happening is when one our computers had a problem booting, and it gave us a message that it was copying the hard drive.
Now, I don't know all that much about networks except what I learned in a 2 day Troubleshooting and Maintenance class I took a few years ago. But I thought the purpose of a UPC is not to backup files, but so you can save things you are working on and shut down your PC safetly in case of a power outage - which we've had a couple of since we moved to this office. To my knowledge, things are not getting backed up to a network as you are working on them. If they are, it would have been nice if they let us know.
*Grumble* - nobody here but us mushrooms.
