The Santa Anas are back something fierce. It's very odd -- the wind dies down in the afternoon and early evening, and starts blowing again about 11:30 at night. I'm sure there's some meteorological explanation for it. The last two nights have been noisy, with the wind whooping under the eaves, the leaves of the umbrella tree clacking together, and the weight on the end of the cord (I know there's a word for that, but I can't think of it) for the light in the breezeway knocking on the wall. Yesterday, there must have been five signals out on the way to work; P. who only lives 2 miles away from the office, said it took him 45 minutes to drive in. Various friends have been reporting damage to their roofs, cars, or trees on their property, and gusts of up to 60 MPH have been reported in downtown L.A. There's a 1200-acre brush fire in Malibu that firefighters are having a hard time putting out- par for the course during Santa Ana conditions. My arms are all scaly, Angus' eczema is flaring up, and John's asthma is too, from all the desert pollen that he's not used to. All the palm trees look awkward, because their leaves are blowing the opposite direction than they're used to. It's also a lot hazier than usual - those mountains I posted pictures of Christmas Eve are barely visible, and a lot less snow on them, too.

But I like wind - it's good for kites. I can't complain too much - I don't have to shovel snow.
