Angus's teacher had her class enter the "Why My Mom Deserves a Diamond" contest put on by a local jeweler for Mother's Day. Lo and behold, he won a garnet for me (which I preferred)! Those are his hands, picking one out with the forceps, over the notebook with all the winning entries.

This is what he wrote:

"My Mom deserves a diamond because I love her. She is good. She is nice. She cooks my breakfast. She's cool because she is a Marine Biologist."

I think it had to be under a certain number of words. Each little paragraph in the notebook is one of the entries. I think the jeweler actually drums up quite a bit of business selling settings for the gemstones and publishing a book from all winning entries every year for the parents to buy. I bought a printout of Angus's entry (suitable for framing) for $10. It was cute, though...

Yes, it's a little oval cut, but I didn't really like the settings the store offered. I'd love to take a jewelry-making class and make something of my own for it.
