Seasons, owies, and homework...
Sep. 14th, 2005 12:03 pmSo the seasons change. The sun is already well engrossed in setting on my drive home from work and there are no longer any terns hanging out on the islands in the the Bolsa Chica wetlands - the parents no longer call as they fly over my open sunroof when I pass (I was going to say shriek, but it's really somewhere between a scream and caw, and sounds somehow happier - it's not an unpleasant noise to me), and their kids have finally fledged and left until next year. I saw a license plate on a BMW that said TARDIS 9 yesterday that made me think of you,
megthelegend.
Came home last night, tried to heat up a cuppa in the microwave before I went outside with the kids before it got completely dark. I was using a mug my father had bought at Pier One Imports, and the handle felt a little too warm, so I thought I would try picking it up by the rim, as usually it's cooler. Big mistake - I let out yell that brought Gareth running in from the front yard, and John from the garage. There must be some metal in the glaze on that one - none of our other cups get hot except from heat transference of their contents. Funny, I tend to make a lot more noise for minor injuries than I do for fairly major pain, like childbirth. Anyway, they found me running the faucet over my thumb, so John got me a cup of water with ice in it that was a bit more portable. He then insisted on making me a couple of vodka lemonades -"here, this'll take the heat out of it - expands the capillaries!" I don't know if that's valid medical advice, but it was nice to carry around and press my stinging thumb against. I flattened out my fingerprint and I'm going to have a couple of blisters, I think.
I got (mostly) out of making dinner, and Angus and I caught up on his reading assignments; he's supposed to read for 15-20 minutes every day and we forgot last night. He chose A Cod's Tale - a younger readers illustrated version of Cod: a Biography of the Fish that Changed the World. He actually read quite a bit himself and I told him I was proud of him - he's a little behind in reading and this book is probably a little advanced for second grade (actually Amazon rates it as grade 4-8). He was less excited about putting his spelling words in alphabetical order. I need to start making up some flash cards.

Date: 2005-09-14 08:34 pm (UTC)The kid's book is really more of a picture book, so if you don't want to spend too much time on the subject, it's a good synopsis. The text might be a little dry for younger kids (and there's a lot of it - we only got about a third of the way through in half an hour's reading last night), but the illustrations are rather cartoony (the people anyway - the fish are fairly realistic), and my kids are fond of it. I've always liked children's picture books for the artwork anyway (I had a bunch before I ever had kids), so this one was kind of a must have for my own bookshelf.
I haven't gotten to read the orginal version myself yet, but it's been on my want list for quite a while.
