Stuff lately...
Mar. 18th, 2005 06:11 pmLessee, let's go time traveling...
This morning - I had kept the sink clean for nearly a week until this morning when the sink backed up when I started the dishwasher. Not doing as well with the decluttering, but one habit at a time...
Yesterday - I made the mistake of showing Gareth how to play the Fullmetal Alchemist game on the website, or rather he saw me playing it and demanded a turn. He actually got to the last level, and when he couldn't beat it was getting all worked up and upset. I decided it was time for a break, so the kids and I went to the park, and I released a couple of books that I will probably never read, since my Mount TBR is so tall. I let Angus and Gareth pick the spot, and they chose a pine tree behind the park sign. I stuck them both in the branches of the same tree, because they were two books in the same series, and it was the only tree with branches I could reach. After I dropped Angus off at school, I noticed the books were still there this morning. I know that park is full of high schoolers in the afternoon, though, so maybe someone will grab them then.
Friday - Angus stayed home from school to go to the doctor. The night before he had complained that his ear was "itchy." At first I thought he was trying to get out of finishing his homework, but when I offered a warm compress for it, he at first was yelling "NONONONO!" (afraid it would hurt), until I touched it to the side of his face, and the yelling immediately changed to "ThankyouThankyouThankyouThankyou..." He went to the doctor that morning and he does indeed have an ear infection. Amoxycillin 2X a day - but at least it must taste good. I'm remembering when I tried to give him some anthistamine (the cheap store brand kind), and he puked all over the bathroom. I tried it myself, and yes, it did have a distinct flavor of gasoline - which can't have been very nice for him with his taste/texture issues.
The wearing o' what color?- getting Angus ready for school, and John (still in bed of course) says, "Hey, he needs to wear something green or he's going to get racked today!" Of course, this is about 5 minutes before we're going to leave for school. I looked around but of course there was nothing both 1) green and 2) clean, and I hear Angus telling him "But I thought you said we should wear orange!" I had an inspiration and went outside to our side yard which mostly weeds and picked some Oxalis leaves; we have some with both yellow and pink flowers - the yellow is a weed and the pink is a good plant, although I'm not sure why we make the distinction. As I picked them, I heard John telling Angus he can worry about the difference between green and orange later - grade schoolers really only pay attention to green.
I shortened the stems, wrapped the ends in a bit of wet paper towel and covered it with aluminum foil. Then I dug around in the sewing notions, found a safety pin and pinned the leaves to his shirt pocket. John gave it dubious glare and declared "That's lame, they're gonna give him a hard time for having a bouttoneire." I looked Angus in the eye, and asked "Do you like it?" He nodded vehemently, and we took off.
When we got to school, nearly every kid was sporting some green item of clothing as they waited in their lines for their teachers. A boy walking ahead of us, probably a third or fourth grader, looked back with a chagrined expression, and said "Was it green day or something?" (Green Day, snigger)
"St. Patrick's Day," I said.
"Oh, no," he exclaimed, checking his clothing. "I'm gonna get pinched!" He looked at Angus and said, "But you're not...ooh, you have shamrocks!"
We stopped and I asked Angus, "Do you think you have enough you could spare one?" He said yes, so we broke one stem off, and handed it to the other boy. He yelled "Thanks!" and dashed off to his line.
When we got to Angus's line, they were already heading to the classroom, and as the other kids passed him, I heard, "Wow, Angus has real shamrocks!" He went to class with a big grin on his face.
I think they probably wilted pretty quickly, but I guess he wore them all day. When I stopped home before going to work, I got to tell John, "HA! The kids thought they were cool!"
Heh, I am validated by first graders. It turned out that the shamrocks did wilt after a couple of hours, but he wore them anyway.
Most of last week - Yes, I did shine my sink, finally. Let's see if my famn damily will let me keep it that way. I put a sticky on a plant pot above it saying something to that effect. Removing the large dishes from the sink, scrubbing and putting them away will have to count towards the 15 minutes of decluttering, because by then it was after eleven. Angus got away with no homework that night because I was so busy in the kitchen all evening. .
Tuesday - The Verbal Victories workshop was good, even if I did freeze up once during some practicing. I knew I was supposed to respond with a another question seeking more information, and dammit if the first time the instructor came at me like an aggressive questioner my mind didn't just go completely blank. VT and IT on either side of me came to my rescue when he looked at them, but I felt completely stupid. I hope my glasses disguised my tearing up a little. I did better the next time he came 'round though. So I suppose I should go back and redo those questions I posted the other day.
