School projects...

A project I helped Gareth with this morning - a doll representing something his ancestors might have worn. I tried not to do too much, except for ironing the pleats in the kilt and the hot glue gun where necessary. It was supposed to be only one country, however, you'll notice an Irish flag (my husband's family) and also a thistle pin (an earring of mine with a bent post - my family is ostensibly Scottish, among other things).
The tartan is an actual tartan of the Johnston clan (his grandmother's maiden name) - it came from a tie my husband's mom gave him, which had gotten rather moth-eaten and unwearable. Not that my husband wears ties very much anyway.
He also had to make a family tree (back to his great-grandparents), and he interviewed his grandmother about what life was like when she was growing up. An interesting thing about John's mom is that she was a mechanic, when very few women were working in that field. Needless to say, she never gets ripped off when her car needs fixing; she's capable of doing it herself, but at nearly 70, she'd rather pay someone else to do it.
