senoritafish: (perfect TV mom)
First day back at school for Angus and Gareth today; 1st grade for Gareth, and 2nd for Angus. Gareth and his friend Connor were both disappointed that they weren't in the same class again; however, they can still see each other at recess and lunch. There was a bit of confusion as to where they were supposed to line up - last year, we all just met at the classroom for at least the first day. Angus had only one person that I recognized from his class last year - I'm wondering where his friend Connor wound up. The lady who is supposed to be his "independence facilitator" this year introduced herself - she's supposed to keep him on track but help out the entire class, too. Angus immediately announced to her that "I believe in all the gods of Ancient Egypt!" and "Ammut eats evil people's hearts." I explained he's been very interested in learning about things Egyptian all summer, but I think it's about time to return that book to the library.

Both of them are in the "portable" classrooms - sort of a doublewide trailer. They're pretty much permanent fixtures, because they were there when I went to that school. For the previous two years, they've been being used because parts of the school were being renovated; now, they're in use because the school has had to absorb students from another school in the district that was closed for budgetary reasons.

Gareth had gotten up in the middle of night and told John his tummy hurt - he went to the bathroom and went back to bed, then both he and his sister had nightmares and climbed in with us (consecutively, I put Avalon back in her room before Gareth came in). This morning I asked if he felt better, and he told me it still hurt a little, but he was ok to go to school, and he didn't seem to have a fever or anything. He ate some breakfast readily enough. We were thinking it was just butterflies, but John called just after lunch time and said he was on his way to pick him up because he threw up in the middle of class. Poor guy. Poor teacher, too. Those portables are all carpeted.
